I am stoked to receive word that two of my screenplays have made it to the Quarter-Finalists for this year's International Filmmaker's Awards. One of the screenplays is New Earth, a science fiction adventure about another dimension. The other is a comedy called Pinky Swear. I look forward to the next round in the competitions. You can view the official finalist award page here.  I love writing about other worlds, magic, and the paranormal.

One of my favorite series that I'm currently working on is the Grumpy Old Wizard series. It is a fun, magical adventure that I would love to see on the big screen. My book tour for the third book in the series, Dark Energy, begins Monday, March 10 and my scheduled stops will be available soon. There will be free book giveaways for ebook copies of this urban fantasy at each tour stop. I hope to see you all there!

Praise for the Grumpy Old Wizard series:

"Fresh and original story with finally a refreshing and more real view on "eternal youth" in which physical eternal teenager beauty does not correspond to eternal teenager in the mind. I really enjoyed it greatly. Also a great storyline, good plot, and really really interesting characters all around." Review from mirba at Amazon.com

"This series is just plain fun. Think of Harry Potter meet the geriatric set and you have an idea of what you are in for with this series. It has humor and enough action to keep you reading. I look forward to the next installment." Review from Dragonflame2045 at Amazon.com

"This is an outstanding book! It is one of the few books in the last few years that has instantly captured my attention and kept it throughout the whole book. Josephine is a deeply engaging character, her friends a nice compliment to her, and the story line. This book combines the correct elements of mystery, suspense, and urban fantasy that will make an outstanding series This book is a true page turner, and a joy to read." Review from Javadog70 at Barnes & Noble.

What to do when your dog likes to eat books

Posted by John O'Riley on March 2, 2014 at 11:05 PM Comments comments (0)

I've loved reading as far back as I remember. When I was in grade school, I owned a purebred cocker spaniel named Rudy who loved to eat books. This provided me with a challenge on how to read my books before they were devoured by my naughty but loveable pet.

One of my favorite spots to hide a book was in between the mattress and the box springs. I was reading a Wrinke In Time by Madeleine L’Engle and about halfway through the book. I remembered how engrossed I was in it and looking forward to some more reading when I came home and found the book on the floor with a bunch of the pages ripped out and the corners of the book chewed badly. That’s right, Rudy had managed to dig it out from between the mattress and the box springs because I hadn’t shoved it very far in. I hadn’t dreamed she would reach in there like that. I didn’t make that mistake again but if I ever forgot to put away a book, it’s days were numbered. I wonder what she would have done with my Kindle if I had owned one at that time.
